Lisa - The Novice!
Hi there! I am Lisa, and I am a learning & development manager at a professional services firm and also a part-time student at OISE in the Master of Adult Education & Community Development program, with a focus on workplace learning and social change. I am passionate about lifelong learning, which is why I decided to work in corporate training and to pursue a masters program. Being at work and at school is challenging – but it has taught me a lot!
I decided to try my first online course near the end of my time at OISE after I got the hang of being back at school. I decided to take this course to learn more about holistic learning, mostly because I’m not very tech-y and thought that this would be a great idea to get the hang of new technology, but also because I wanted to experience collaborating online and also as an exercise in self discipline! This course has challenged me in all three of these areas.
We created this site to help those taking classes online, and we were lucky that our group was comprised of different levels of experience. I am definitely the novice and I have to say that this experience has taught me a lot. Hopefully our own experiences and lessons learned will be helpful to all of you who have come here for help with online learning :)

Novice User
I call myself the "Novice User" because this is my first online course, and my first experience building a website! As such, I've learned some very key lessons about taking a course online:
1. Online classes are more time consuming, as in order to keep up a student must log in daily.
2. An online course requires more attention to detail as well as more self-discipline - there's no "face time" with a professor who verbally reminds the class of what's due and what's coming up next. A student must keep on top of these deadlines themself in an online class.
3. An online course has a greater IT learning curve for the novice student.
Don't fret, Novice Students...team work in an online course is hugely helpful for us, as we have the opportunity to learn off those who are more advanced. In addition to learning the mandated course content, the novice student also improves their IT skills through taking a class online!
